In anticipation of Pixar’s latest 3D animated feature, The New York Times yesterday published a behind the scenes glimpse of Ratatouille, directed by Academy Award winner Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Iron Giant).

The article, “A Rat with a Wisk and a Dream” provides an interesting insight into their research and design influences. One citation denotes the challenge in making the 270 plus pieces of food Pixar recreated, realistic but not “really photo-real” as to maintain a pleasing aesthetic. “A scallop, for example, needs ridges and bumps to look realistic. But add too many and the shellfish becomes grotesque.”
